Today I realised a funny thing. I’ve never been in a Camry. Or for that matter, a hybrid of any sorts. So, what would my first experience be like?

Kinja'd!!!

First impressions - it’s quiet and torquey. It feels odd to sit in traffic with the A/C blowing without feeling or hearing any vibration from the engine. In fact, it’s an adequate cruiser, both for the city and the highway. In the city, the electric motor delivers a gob of torque enough to catch you off guard. On the highway or longer stretches of road at higher speed, the shift between EV and ICE is practically seamless and even then, I can barely tell if the engine is running. Only under hard acceleration do you hear it, and with the electric motor to help, this beigemobile does gain pace with a surprising lack of fuss.

However, the ride can only be described as “meh”. It isn’t soft enough to really mute harsh cobblestone vibrations, but it isn’t hard enough to be anything communicative either, although the excess weight of the batteries may contribute to the effect. Also, the interior, especially the centre console and shifter look somewhat plasticky. The rear sunshades were a nice touch though.

Also, the rear window switches show just how out of touch I am with modern cars. My family hasn’t bought a new car in nearly ten years (not that I’m complaining, the MINI is fantastic), so the only place in the car I ever saw a self-lowering and raising window was at the front on the driver’s side. Fancy finding them in the back...

Just read this and it reminded me of you. Ever been to one of these places?

Camry taxis are taking over the world.

This makes Toyota somewhat nervous.

They’ve already got a monopoly on HK and Japanese taxis, so why stop there? x)

Oh no, far too expensive and fancy for me! Those kind of places are pretty exclusive and well, it’s not really local cuisine. Just a plain steamed fish with some veg and another side dish would do me fine.
